Points of Interest

Gunsfontein is the farm where poet NP van wyk Louw was raised. The original dwelling a corbelled house built in +/- 1756 is still standing, although unrestored is in a good condition. Ruins of old British forts with shooting holes built during the "Anglo Boere War" are on the farm. Beautiful view points with scenes of the Karoo mountains and rivers. Rich bird life for the bird watchers on the farm dams. Typical Karoo flora. Come and experience SNOW in the winter and exceptionally beautiful sunsets.

The Original dwelling dated back +/- 1756This stone hut known as the karbeelhut is ± built in the year 1756 by the white farmers and is in very good condition and unrestored. The farmers built the karbeelhut with stone from the fields. The wagons traveled from the riverbeds to the karbeelhut.The karbeelhut is a one room, cramped windowless hut with a ditch at the top of the roof. This ditch is all unwanted vermin shot under the stock has reaped. At that time, Klaas van Wijk , his wife and five children lived in this hut. One of his daughters Poppie later years Mrs. Louw became - the mother of the poet NP van Wyk Louw family.
Beautiful view pointsScenic 4 x 4 mountain passes. Spectacular and unique view points can be seen every day. Typical Karoo vegetation with startree/ sterboom only seen in this area.
